Where there’s a Will there’s a Way and in Fitzcarraldo, Werner Herzog’s, really wonderful telling of Obsession and Opera we meet the two head on. Fitzcarraldo is a right and proper gentleman one whose dreams have out-stepped the very life air that he breathes. Dreamers are the most Hopeless of People but the most interesting and Fitzcarraldo dreams of building an Opera House in his Native Peru with the Legendary Opera Singer Caruso to sing! But to fulfill his dream he must get a great deal of money.
Joining a Rubber Baron he decides to lay claim to some land that has so far been unclaimed by the Peruvian Government for Exploitation.He buys a huge boat and begins his treacherous journey. Eventually he enlists some Native people’s of the Jungle who were known to kill the innocent on sight. Fitzcarrado’s plan is to take the boat over the mountain and onto the Amazon River on the other side, thus avoiding a series of deadly rapids… and then laying claim to the valuable land where the Rubber Trees are. It doesn’t work out as planned, but the film will capture your attention.
